On the occasion of POP UP TUBA, a pop-up festival at Turnhoutsebaan in Deurne, POP UP TUBA and MoMu selected illustration and character designer Kelly De Meyer to make a festival and the museum. Being inspired by the current exhibition MoMu Now, Kelly created an interactive tapestry where people can ‘color’ it with needle and thread.

Kelly De Meyer is the artist behind WE ARE KELLY. Staying true to her signature style of drawing with photographs and taking snap shots with her pencil, Kelly has created an interactive tapestry where people not only can admire her fine talent but also can sew on.

How did the interactive tapestry come to life?
I made the artistic decision to choose silhouettes of the exhibition that would look amazing graphically, illustratively and in black and white. The illustration brings the museum’s archive to life. To reinforce this concept , I wanted the colored treads to enhance the idea even further by adding color to the black & white tapestry.

Do people have to know how to sew?
Absolutely not. Looking at the tapestry you can already see that people who can and cannot sew have worked on it. People do not have to follow the lines. I had a young couple that sewed a random heart on the tapestry. It is more important to have fun than it being correctly sewn and aesthetically pleasing.

Do people easily approach the tapestry and start sewing it?
I usually do make the first move: ask people and prepare the needle and thread for them. Some of them are kind of scared of doing it but the ones who do take a shot at it, end up having fun. The other day, a small family visited the shop and I convinced the dad, who had never sewn before, to have a try. He ended up sewing for half an hour and added his personal touch to the tapestry! It’s nice to have a personal story behind all the stitching and being able to recollect those memories after the tapestry is finished.

Last but not least, what did you think of our MoMu Now exhibition?
It was such a nice exhibition! I was more drawn to the works of Walter Van Beirendonck and Martin Margiela but I really liked the selection that was displayed. It’s great that MoMu lets the audience see what happens behind the scenes of the museum.

We are thrilled to see the end result! If this interactive tapestry has sparked up your curiosity, make sure to visit the WE ARE KELLY pop up store, say hello to Kelly and gather your sewing courage and add your touch to the tapestry!
