This Tuesday MoMu+Friends visited the SWEET 18-exhibition now running at Kasteel d’Ursel in Antwerp. The FRIENDS, BENEFACTORS OF MOMU, enjoyed a guided tour by the curator of the MoMu-collection, Wim Mertens, who showed us the influence of the 18th century on contemporary art and design.
Entering the park of kasteel d’Ursel it struck us that there couldn’t be a better place for the SWEET 18-exhebition! The surroundings of the castle contributed to the nostalgic atmosphere and contrasted the contemporary artworks. During the tour, Wim gave us an insight on how the 18th century, especially the period’s most iconic figure Marie Antoinette, subtly returns in pieces by e.g. Walter Van Beirendonck, Raf Simons and Nicolas Ghesquière for Balenciaga.
At the end of the visit we had an afternoon tea in one of the rooms of the former summer residence of d’Ursel family. The scones and macaroons with a cup of tea were the best way to end the day à la facon de Marie Antoinette.
